What it is

Dead market shrimp (grocery/seafood-counter shrimp), fished as chunks or whole — the utility bait for surf, pier, bay, and jetty. Distinct from live ghost shrimp (ghost-shrimp.md): cheaper, tougher, available everywhere. One Facebook shore-fishing creator ranked "a chunk of cheap shrimp" the #3 shore bait for big bass, behind sardine and grunion.

How to hook / rig it

  • Chunk on a Carolina rig or hi-lo rig: peel or leave shell on; thread a thumbnail-sized chunk onto a #2–#1 hook. Shell-on stays on the hook better.
  • Whole shrimp: for sheepshead and larger bay bass around structure.
  • Tip jigs: shrimp chunk on a small bucktail or leadhead sweetens artificials for perch/croaker.

calico-bass (bay/rocky shore), barred-surfperch, yellowfin-croaker, spotfin croaker, california-halibut (surf, secondary), sheepshead, channel-catfish (species file lists shrimp among catfish baits), sand-bass.
