Sand Crabs (Pacific Mole Crabs)

What it is

Pacific mole crab (Emerita analoga) — the soft-bodied burrowing crab of the surf zone. The consensus #1 bait for barred surfperch and near-universal for corbina. Soft-shells ("softies," freshly molted crabs) are the premium grade — soft enough to thread whole and irresistible to corbina. Free: dig them yourself at the waterline.

How to hook / rig it

  • Thread tail-first onto the hook: push a #4–#2 hook through the rear/tail section and out the top of the shell; soft-shells can be threaded whole.
  • Carolina rig: 1/2–3/4 oz egg sinker, 18–24" leader — the standard perch/corbina rig (Steve Barnes, Jun 27, 2026 Facebook post: "sandcrab... 15lb line/20lb braid/size 2 octopus hooks").
  • Fish the wash: cast into the foamy whitewater and troughs where crabs are being tumbled; corbina feed "in the very skinny water" (Huntington State Beach spot file).
  • Find them: look for V-shaped ripples in the receding wash; scoop sand at the waterline with your hands or a sand-crab rake.

Dig your own — no shop needed. Rakes and hand-scooping at any sandy beach with a surf zone. Soft-shell availability peaks around molts; hard-shells work but are tougher to hook.
