What it is

Pacific chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) — the big, hardy, aggressive live bait for trophy-class fish. Larger and tougher than sardines/anchovies (8–14"+), mackerel survive longer in the tank and on the hook, and their size selects for bigger predators. Also the classic cut bait (chunks/strips) for sharks and bottom fish.

How to hook / rig it

  • Nose or shoulder hook on heavy leader: the island yellowtail standard — 40–60 lb leader, 3/0–5/0 hook; slow-trolled or flylined around kelp edges, structure, and paddies.
  • Bridle rig: for the largest macks aimed at big bluefin or white seabass.
  • Cut: cross-cut chunks for leopard shark / bat ray (fish-finder rig), strips for rockfish and halibut.
  • Make your own: Sabiki rigs, small feathers, or shiny jigs around piers, jetties, and kelp — mackerel schools are the easiest self-made bait in SoCal.

Species it catches (slugs)

Live: yellowtail (heavy-leader island standard), white-seabass, bluefin-tuna (big baits for big fish), california-halibut (slow-trolled). Cut: leopard-shark, california-halibut, rockfish, bonito (chunks), pacific-mackerel (self-caught).

Where to get it

Barges occasionally have mackerel mixed in.
