What it is

Market squid (Doryteuthis opalescens) — the "candy bait" of Southern California. Live squid is the consensus trigger bait for white seabass and a top bait for halibut, rockfish, and surf sharks. Availability is the most volatile of any live bait: squid runs come and go, and some receiver networks haven't had live squid in years.

How to hook / rig it

  • Whole live squid: hooked once through the tip of the mantle or through the tentacle crown; fished on a dropper loop, Carolina rig, or flylined — the white seabass spring presentation (dawn, kelp edges).
  • Fresh-dead: the best backup — buy a scoop of live squid, fish what you need, bag and freeze the rest on ice immediately. Multiple Bloodydecks regulars insist fresh-frozen self-caught squid outfishes store-bought.
  • Strips/tentacles: squid strips on rock-cod rigs and shrimp flies; tentacle clusters for halibut.
  • Do NOT buy rinsed market squid for bait if you can avoid it: the Bloodydecks "fresh dead squid (LA/N.OC)" thread consensus is that Asian-market squid (e.g. 99 Ranch ~3 lb box) is rinsed/bleached for human consumption and fishes worse than un-rinsed bait squid. Bait barges do not sell "fresh dead" squid — buy live and freeze it yourself.

Species it catches (slugs)

Live: white-seabass (the #1 trigger bait, Apr–Jun), california-halibut (Oxnard night-bite consensus), rockfish (live squid behind Oxnard trips), leopard-shark (whole squid in the surf), yellowtail (islands), calico-bass. Dead/frozen: rockfish (strips), leopard-shark, california-halibut, barred-surfperch (cut).

Artificial matchups

  • white-seabass: surface iron (Tady 45) and yo-yo jigs on deeper fish when squid isn't available.
  • california-halibut: swimbaits, flukes, spoons/metal.
  • rockfish: heavy jigs, shrimp flies.

Where to get it

  • Bait barges — when they have it: Long Beach Bait Co. (Dec 16, 2021 976-TUNA report: "Nachos barge has LIVE SQUID and 5-6" SARDINES"); Newport barge has carried live squid (San Pedro Bait Co. 2014 report). Call first — squid is seasonal and unreliable.
  • Make your own: night squid-jigging with underwater squid lights, a squid brail, and a crowder; freeze in 3–5 lb bags (Vacmaster chamber sealer recommended by a Bloodydecks Ventura regular).
  • NOT at Ventura/CI receivers: per the Bloodydecks "Ventura Bait" thread, neither Ventura nor Channel Islands receivers have had live squid in roughly 10–15 years.
