Live Anchovies (Northern Anchovy)

What it is

Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), "chovies"/"deans" — the small (4–6") live bait that historically anchored the SoCal live-bait fishery. BigFishTackle's SoCal live-bait primer calls anchovies "the most popular of all the live baits available," captured daily year-round by round-haul boats and cured in receiver boxes before sale. More effective alive than dead; also sold frozen and salted for surf/pier use. Dominant in cooler-water years when sardines are scarce (wonews.com).

How to hook / rig it

  • Nose hook on light line: the finesse live-bait presentation — 10–20 lb leader, #4–#1 hooks; lets the small bait swim freely for calico/sand bass, halibut drifts, and flylining tuna when sardines are unavailable.
  • Chum: the classic chum bait — handfuls tossed to start a bite behind the boat; hook baits fished back into the chum line.
  • Trap/double-hook rigs: two small hooks for halibut when short-striking.
  • Fragile: handle gently, keep water cool and flowing, don't overcrowd the tank (small boats: 1–3 scoops max per BigFishTackle).

Species it catches (slugs)

calico-bass, sand-bass (kelp/bay finesse), california-halibut (drifted live), yellowtail (secondary to sardine), white-seabass (secondary), bonito, rockfish (chum + hook), barred-surfperch (frozen/salted on piers), pacific-mackerel (chum).

Artificial matchups

Same as sardines for most species; for bass also small swimbaits and leadhead grubs when live bait is unavailable or to cover water faster.

Where to get it

Same receiver network as sardines (see sources.md). Often the default scoop when sardines are scarce — ask what's in the receivers that morning. Frozen/salted at tackle shops and landings for surf/pier fishing.
