What it is

Burrowing ghost shrimp (Callianassa californiensis and relatives) — pumped from tidal flats, harbor mud, and bay sand with a slurp gun / shrimp pump. A premium, fragile bait prized for perch, corbina, and croaker; one of the two baits named in trophy corbina posts alongside sand crabs. Delicate body = poor hook durability, which is the central tradeoff in every discussion.

How to hook / rig it

  • Thread tail-to-head: run the hook through the tail fan and out near the head so the shrimp sits straight.
  • Secure with bait elastic / "magic thread": the universal fix for fragility — wrap thread around the baited hook so casts don't strip it (multiple Facebook reel comments; Hey Skipper bait-ranking series).
