Frozen Squid (Market Squid, Dead)

What it is

Dead market squid in all its forms: fresh-dead (self-caught, un-rinsed, frozen on the boat — the gold standard), bait-box frozen (commercial 5 lb boxes at tackle shops), and food-grade (Asian-market boxes — rinsed/bleached, inferior for bait). Whole squid for sharks and halibut; strips for rockfish; tentacle clusters for perch.

How to hook / rig it

  • Strips on rock-cod rigs: 2–3" strips on shrimp flies or twin-hook rockfish rigs — the standard deepwater offering.
  • Whole on a fish-finder rig: for leopard shark and bat ray in the surf; 4/0–6/0 circle hook, 3–6 oz pyramid sinker.
  • Tentacle clusters / cut pieces: Carolina-rigged for surf halibut and perch.
  • Freeze it right: if you buy a live scoop, bag squid in 3–5 lb portions and freeze immediately on ice; avoid freezer burn (Bloodydecks Ventura regular recommends a chamber sealer).
