Cut Mackerel (Chunks & Strips)

What it is

Pacific mackerel cut into cross-cut chunks or long strips — the oily, high-scent dead bait for sharks, halibut, and bottom fish. Free if you Sabiki your own mackerel; cheap if you buy frozen. The scent trail is the point: mackerel oil disperses and pulls cruising predators to the bait.

How to hook / rig it

  • Chunk on a fish-finder (sliding sinker) rig: 3–6 oz pyramid sinker, 3–5 ft leader, 4/0–6/0 circle hook — the standard leopard-shark surf rig.
  • Strips on rock-cod rigs: thin diagonal strips flutter on the drop for rockfish.
  • Butterflied / half mackerel: larger offering for bat ray and seven-gill shark.
  • Keep chunks bloody and fresh; refreeze once at most.
