What it is

Mussel meat and clam necks/strips — the classic "meat" baits for surfperch and croaker. Mussels (bait-shop or self-gathered) are the barred-surfperch classic; clam is the tougher, saltier backup that stays on the hook when crabs are scarce (Carlsbad spot file: "clams or mussel meat when crabs are scarce (Oct–Apr)").

How to hook / rig it

  • Mussel meat threaded on the hook: use a whole mussel or a thumb-sized piece on a #4–#2 hook, Carolina or hi-lo rig; wrap with bait elastic if the meat is soft.
  • Clam necks/strips: tougher than mussel; good for casting distance and nibbling perch.
  • Secure soft baits with magic thread/bait elastic — same technique as ghost shrimp.
